꽃샘추위가 매서웠던 3월이 지나고 새싹이 움트기 시작하는 4월도 벌써 중순으로 접어들었다. 부쩍 따뜻해진 날씨에 꽃이나 채소를 가꾸어볼까 하는 생각도 들지만 실천에 옮기기가 쉽지만은 않다. 

막상 꽃과 채소를 키우려고 해도 어디에서 모종을 구할 것이며, 어떻게 키울 것인지 막막할 따름이다. 이런 고민을 해결해주는 곳이 있다. 바로 종로 꽃시장 거리다.

종로 6가 충신시장 입구 길목에 위치한 꽃시장 특화거리는, 원래 종로5~6가 거리에 길게 늘어서 있던 꽃가게들이 새롭게 이전한 곳이다. 당시 거리에 꽃과 묘목, 다육식물 등 각종 화훼류를 파는 150여명의 노점상들이 있다 보니 꽃 피는 3~4월이면 사람들이 너무 많이 몰려 길을 지나다니기가 힘들 정도였다고 한다. 

이에 따라 종로구는 고심 끝에 ‘걷기 편한 종로거리 만들기 프로젝트’를 실시했다. 이는 시민들의 보행권 확보와 생계형 노점상의 안정적인 영업 및 침체된 이면도로 상권 활성화를 도모하려는 취지였다. 

그 결과, 현재 △종로2가 관철동 ‘젊음의 거리’를 비롯해 △공평동 ‘화신 먹거리촌’ △종로3가 관수동 ‘빛의 거리’, 종로3가 낙원동 ‘다문화 거리’ △종로4가 창경궁로 ‘녹지 거리’ △종로6가 양사길 ‘화훼·묘목 거리’, 대학천남길 등 7곳이 조성됐다. 그 중 화훼 노점상들은 바로 인근 양사길로 옮겨져 따로 ‘화훼·묘목 특화거리’를 조성하게 됐다.

종로구 건설관리와 가로시설 담당팀의 고형윤 주무관은 “당시 대로변에 화훼 노점이 많았기 때문에 거리 통행에 불편이 많았다.”면서 “프로젝트를 진행하면서 대로변에 있던 노점들을 이면 도로로 집어넣고 보도를 확장했다. 현재의 위치 역시 많은 고민 끝에 선정하게 된 것”이라고 설명했다. 

고 주무관은 “특히 거리별 특화사업을 통한 인지도 향상 및 분산된 노점을 통합, 매대 디자인화, 축소·규격화함으로써 고객의 집객 및 홍보 효과를 높여 거리 상권 활성화도 기대했다.”며 “실제로 프로젝트 이후 충신 재래시장 주변의 죽어있던 상권이 되살아나는 효과를 얻었다.”고 말했다.

굳이 꽃과 모종을 구입할 계획이 없더라도 꽃시장 골목을 구경하는 재미도 쏠쏠하다. 도심 속에서 다양한 꽃과 나무들을 구경하며 걸을 수 있는 나들이 길로도 제격이다. 꽃시장 거리가 끝나는 곳은 전통시장인 충신시장의 입구와 연결돼 있다. 꽃시장 나들이 후 전통시장까지 한 번에 구경할 수 있다.

꽃시장을 찾은 시민들은 성큼 다가온 봄기운을 만끽하고 있었다. 김홍순(여·68세)씨는 “그동안 날씨가 쌀쌀해서 엄두를 못냈는데, 이제 집안에 봄기운을 불어넣고 싶어서 나왔다.”면서 “꽃시장에 오면 꽃 만 아니라 화분이나 씨앗 등을 두루 둘러볼 수 있어서 좋다.”고 말했다. 김 씨는 그러면서 베란다에 심을 수국 두 그루와 꽃씨를 구매했다.

오혜미(여·29세)씨는 “봄이 가장 먼저 찾아오는 곳이 꽃시장이 아닐까 싶다.”며 “우울할 때는 이곳에 와서 꽃들을 구경하기만 해도 기분이 좋아진다.”고 말했다. 오 씨는 “마침 근처에 약속이 있어 들렀다가 새로운 다육식물을 심어볼까 해서 찾아오게 됐다.”면서 “푸근한 시장 인심 덕에 집 근처 화원보다 훨씬 저렴한 가격에 구입할 수 있었다.”고 말했다.

김 씨는 “다행히 손님들은 예전에 비해 더 깨끗하고 정돈된 느낌이 든다고 좋아하신다.”면서도 “조금만 더 꽃시장이 알려져서 손님들이 더 많이 찾아오셨으면 하는 바람이 있다.”고 말했다.

한국농수산식품유통공사는 대한민국다육식물문화협의회와 함께 오는 4월 21일(토)부터 22일(일)까지 aT 화훼공판장에서 ‘2018 대한민국 다육식물 대전’을 개최한다.

다육식물은 사막이나 높은 산 등 건조한 지역에서 살아남기 위해 두꺼운 줄기나 잎 등에 수분을 많이 가지고 있는 식물을 말한다.

다육식물은 음이온이 많아 치매와 우울증을 예방하는데 도움이 되며, 정서함양 등에도 탁월한 것으로 알려지면서 찾는 이들이 우리나라를 비롯해 유럽 등으로도 빠르게 확산되고 있는 추세다.

이번 전시회 출품작품은 ▲돌나물과 다육식물 350점 ▲선인장 20점 ▲메셈 50점 ▲수공예화분 100점 등 총 520여종의 식물이 전시된다.

출품작품 중 심사를 통해 대상, 금상, 은상, 동상, 우수상, 인기상 등이 수여되며, 관람객을 대상으로 행사 양일 오후 2시에 행운권 추첨을 통해 다육식물 등 다양한 기념품을 증정한다.

aT 이병호 사장은 “단순 취미생활을 넘어 전문화 되어가는 시대의 흐름을 타고 세계적인 명품, 명작, 희귀품을 한 자리에 모아 다육식물 전시회를 할 수 있게 되어 보람되고 뿌듯하다”라며, “이번 전시를 통해 일반인들도 고급 다육식물의 매혹을 흠뻑 느끼고 길러볼 수 있는 계기가 되길 바란다”라고 말했다.
